Im Leben und über das Leben hinaus
(In Life and Beyond)

A documentary (with sub-titles) by Peter von Gunten of Switzerland

Friday, March 24, 2006
7:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall

(Free-will donation)

As part of the Reformation, the Anabaptist movement began in the 16th century. Throughout Europe, Anabaptists were persecuted, forced to recant their faith, imprisoned and executed. This film, which premiered in Switzerland in January 2005 and is still running in select theaters in Switzerland, portrays Mennonites who live in the Swiss Jura today and the Amish-Mennonites of Swiss descent who live in Berne, Indiana. They share the same principles, among which are living according to the Bible, practicing adult anabaptism, leading a life free of violence, and separating religion and government. The members of the communities portrayed in the film offer outsiders the opportunity to participate directly in their religious, cultural and daily lives.

The film is of particular interest to the Monroe Swiss Singers, one of Turner Hall's member organizations. In 2001, the group was warmly welcomed by the citizens of Berne, Indiana as the featured performer for the community's Berne Heritage Days. The Monroe Swiss Singers also had the opportunity to provide special music for the Mennonite church service there.

The showing of this documentary at the Turner Hall is made possible through the Chicago office of the Swiss Consulate General, with particular thanks to Ruth Mühlestein of the Consulate's office.
