If you're looking for a not-so-typical Oktoberfest, this event is for you! In Switzerland, Chilbi is often associated with fall festivals that celebrate the descent and return of cows and their herdsmen from a summer of grazing, milking and making cheese in the alps. It is also connected with a religious celebration the last Sunday of September called Ernte-Dank-Sonntag, or Thanksgiving Sunday. Turner Hall's Chilbifest incorporates elements of Switzerland's festivals in four distinct events during the weekend.

Beer and Cheese Tasting Event

The gold of Green County...cheese and beer...will be showcased at the first event of the Chilbifest weekend.

Celebrating the industry and art of cheesemaking that was brought to Green County by immigrant Swiss, the event will feature the award-winning specialty cheeses of area cheesemakers, ranging from limburger and German brick to feta, wheel Swiss and many others. Although wine is generally thought of as a pairing with cheese, beer is often overlooked as an equally suitable and palatable pairing. With flavorable Berghoff beers of a distinct European character, the Joseph Huber Brewing Company of Monroe, the country's second oldest continually running brewery, will offer samplings of some favorite seasonal Old World brews. As a guide to beer and cheese pairings, the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board is supplying everyone who attends the event a complimentary beer and cheese pairing wheel.

In addition to the pairing guide, the $20 admission fee covers an afternoon's worth of cheese and beer samples and a free souvenir Turner Hall beer glass. For a $5 admission fee, a non-alcoholic option of root beer, also including the souvenir glass and pairing guide, is being offered.

The participating cheesemakers include Chalet Cheese Co-op, Decatur Dairy, Edelweiss Creamery, Klondike Cheese, Maple Leaf Cheese Co-op, Roth Käse USA, and Silver Lewis Cheese. Attendees will likewise have the opportunity to visit with cheesemakers and learn more about their craft.

To complement the beer and cheese tasting, the Ratskeller Restaurant of Turner Hall is preparing two types of bratwurst (Kaiser and Schublig) and German potato salad, which will be available ala carte or as a plate, ranging from $2 to $5. In addition, the afternoon will be filled with Old World sounds of live accordion music, and throughout the event will be "Tombola", a version of prize chance drawings popular in Switzerland. The Monroe Swiss Singers will also have their newly revised cookbook, Old World Family Recipes, 2nd edition available for sale.

Ecumencial Service With Presention of Jodlermesse Nr. 1

Sunday morning at 11 a.m. will be a very special presentation of a sacred multi-movement yodel composition performed by the combined Monroe Swiss Singers, Männerchor New Glarus and Jodlerklub New Glarus. Jodlermesse (Yodel Mass) Nr. 1 by Swiss composer Jost Marty (1920 - 1988) will be the featured music at an ecumenical church service in the Grand Hall. Well-known throughout Switzerland, the composition is often heard as part of Ernte-Dank-Sonntag services. which is a religious Thanksgiving observance the last Sunday of September.

Fr. Michael Klarer (pictured at right) of Monroe's St. Victor Parish, who is of Swiss descent with familial roots in the canton Appenzell and a member of the Monroe Swiss Singers, will lead the service. All are welcome to attend, with a free-will offering being accepted.
