Presented by New World Swiss Club members, Richard and Sandy Horn of Brooklyn, WI, the
travelogue of a recent trip to Bavaria will highlight the annual St. Leonhard procession.
The people of the Bavarain Alps celebrate St. Leonhard more than almost any other saint.
Once known as the Bauernherrgott (the Lord God of farmers), today St. Leonhard
is honored as the protector of all those working the land and the patron saint of horses
and farm animals. In ancient times as today, St. Leonhard is asked to protect cattle and
horses from illness, to watch over the farms and ward off financial straits. Almost every
village in Upper Bavaria holds a ceremony in autumn in thanks to St. Leonhard. Some of
the processions in the region date back as far as 1442. The parades feature colorful
traditional costumes, horses, beautifully decorated carts and other displays unique
to the event.
The Horns' travelogue will also visit other well-known destinations like Kufstein and
Innsbrück in Austria, and Bamberg in the Franken region of Bavaria.
The hour-long presentation is part of Turner Hall's on-going 2009 Swiss Heritage Series,
